As English Tourism Week continues, a special event at The Common Room shone a spotlight on the growing importance of storytelling in shaping the North East’s visitor economy - with Local Heroes co-founder Dan Prince taking a seat at the heart of the conversation.

Local Heroes is collecting stories and food memories from residents and visitors of South Shields for an exciting project that celebrates the unique food, cultural and heritage identity of South Shields.

Local Heroes brought an incredible North East story to life with a sold-out showing of short documentary Out and About with the Colmans at The Customs House in South Shields that offered attendees an immersive experience celebrating the Colman family's story and the vibrant local culture of the region, as well as celebrating 100 years of fish and chips with the Colman family.

An award-winning audio producer with a passion for people-powered storytelling, Lottie brings experience across podcasts, audiobooks, radio, and audio documentaries.

The film premiere of Hands on the Wheel, a powerful new feature-length documentary directed by Dan Prince and produced by Local Heroes, took place on Thursday 30th October 2025 at Gosforth Civic Theatre in Newcastle.

In a time when it’s easy to feel divided, Breaking Bread is about rediscovering what we have in common through food, memories and shared experience. Led by parents, children, and staff at Highfield Academy, as well as the wider community, this project uses food and food memories to spark connection, conversation and understanding. 

This project is a collaboration between Ruby Kelly and Local Heroes which was initially commissioned for the Local Heroes podcast, but instead evolved into the soundtrack for their upcoming web series, Out and About. Local Heroes is a regional storytelling platform that, through live events, film, podcasts, documentaries and products, shines a light on the people, places and stories that define, inspire and connect communities.
