Sunderland-based Songwriter Ruby Kelly debuts her new single inspired by the North East

Based on her ever-growing love for the North East of England, Sunderland-based Welsh singer/ songwriter Ruby Kelly shows influences of Americana and Folk in her latest single Born and Raised inspired by the world and people around her.

This project is a collaboration between Ruby Kelly and Local Heroes which was initially commissioned for the Local Heroes podcast, but instead evolved into the soundtrack for their upcoming web series, Out and About. Local Heroes is a regional storytelling platform that, through live events, film, podcasts, documentaries and products, shines a light on the people, places and stories that define, inspire and connect communities.

Demonstrating a sense of heart-warming honesty and pride, Ruby Kelly portrays a deep roots-orientated sound in her music. Speaking deeply of the bonds between people and how life can often shift in different directions, but also how that unity and individual connection never truly break. She also speaks truthfully about love, life and friendship and how beautiful it truly is to be alive in this world.

Speaking of how the North-East inspired Born and Raised, Ruby says, “I moved from Wales to the North East in 2021. Since then I have completely fallen in love with the wonderful culture that Sunderland displays so proudly. The music scene and people alike are one of the many reasons I now see this city as my home. Sunderland is an ever-growing music city and a place that has welcomed me with open arms since the day I got here. This song is for Sunderland.”

After having great success with her last single “St Elmo” - described as ‘Rare talent’ and Track of the Month by Crack Magazine - the Welsh songstress was featured on the magazine’s front cover and praised as: ‘One of the finest singer/ songwriters working in the region today.’ Ruby has gone on to support The Levellers, The Futureheads, and Ferocious Dog, and is set to appear on the acoustic stage at Beautiful Days festival at Escot Park in Devon later this month.

Ruby Kelly graduated with a First Class BA Hons from The Northern Academy Of Music Education in Sunderland and received the Amy Davidson award in recognition of her exceptional dedication. The Welsh artist has also been part of We Make Culture’s ‘Next Steps Community’ cohort and Generator’s ‘First Notes Programme’.
