REFLECTIONS | JAMES FILDES

Title

What James Fildes Taught Me About Creating Space for Young Minds

The Story

After experiencing a lack of support for his own mental health, James set up Space North East—a men’s group in Sunderland supporting those facing depression, anxiety, and loneliness. His willingness to care for others has given him a renewed sense of purpose, making a real impact in his community. James shares his journey from feeling lost and suicidal to overcoming adversity and finding meaning through helping others.

Opening

I felt an instant connection with James. Space North East was a CIC I knew had a name in the area for helping men’s mental health. James has put himself at the forefront of speaking out about his own issues, he  is very engaging and very open to wherever the conversation goes.

What Stayed With Me

James is focused on helping people. He is very switched on in learning, understanding and unafraid of any obstacles. His energy was above and beyond positive and I knew the next time I saw James, he would have grown as a person, as it felt the purpose of what he wanted to do, which was help people, was the driving force that carries him forward.

The Bigger Reflection

Normalising the need to talk, with men is always going to be difficult to navigate. I do think it takes generations of societal shifts in mindset, without losing what men are naturally drawn to, but it will take its own path. It’s walk and talk, it’s having a coffee, a pint, a sea dip, a gym group. I think it’s all of these things. But without the shame and ‘piss take’ which past generations have suffered. A place to be yourself.

A Line I Won’t Forget

“I know I care deeply about other people”

James does not shy away from his feeling s in the moment and this felt really genuine. A moment in a conversation that came from deep within who he truly is, wants to be, and that acceptance of his past that has shaped his future purpose.

Closing Thought

The word ‘mission’ gets overused around the self help/personal development world, but, it is the perfect word to describe what James has set out to do. He has a new purpose, knows what that is and is 100% all in to move forward on that journey.

“That was one of the best interviews I’ve done Dan”. His first words to me at recording, and words I will try and carry with me as I move forward on my own journey.
