What Steve Hoggy Taught Me About Asking For Help

The Story

With a supportive upbringing and what appeared to be a normal life, Steve opens up about his hidden struggle with self-harm. Carrying this in silence took its toll, leading him to a breaking point where he began planning his own suicide. Now, after making significant changes, Steve shares his story to show that anyone can be struggling beneath the surface. A strong advocate for community, he now helps others daily through his work in health and fitness.

Opening

I’ve known Steve for years. He’s trained me, and we’ve had plenty of conversations, so I knew parts of his story—but not all of it. Hearing the full picture was a surprise. Interviewing someone you know can be challenging, especially when you’re not sure how much they’re willing to open up. That was something I was aware of going into this.

What Stayed With Me

What stayed with me most was the extent of what Steve had been dealing with in silence. The self-harm, carried out over years, was something you would never have known from the outside. It’s a reminder that the people we see every day may be going through things we can’t see, and sometimes, we don’t realise until it’s almost too late.

The Bigger Reflection

There’s something powerful about recognising you need help, especially when you feel like you’ve reached the end of the road in your own mind. But asking for that help, and then actually making changes, takes real courage. Steve has done that. He’s changed his habits, his mindset, and the direction of his life. That takes strength.

A Line I Won’t Forget

“I have a duty to be able to share this.”

It took courage for Steve to sit down and tell his story. It’s deeply personal, and putting it out there isn’t easy. But his intention is clear, if sharing his experience helps even one person, then it’s worth it.

Closing Thought

Knowing more about Steve changes how you see him, but in a positive way. It brings a deeper level of understanding and connection. There’s something powerful about someone trusting you with their truth. It creates a bond that goes beyond words, just a mutual understanding, human to human.
