Title

What Andy Reid Taught Me About Surviving Domestic Violence as a Man

The Story

Strongman Andy Reid shares his experience as a victim of domestic abuse — a story rarely told. Now working in mental health, he’s rebuilding his life after becoming a father, but the journey hasn’t been easy. We explore stigma around men seeking help, toxic relationships, and losing his identity after heart failure ended his strongman career. A raw conversation about resilience, identity, and redefining strength.

Opening

Andy is a big, imposing figure — a strongman with an intimidating presence. But in person, he’s soft-spoken, articulate, and emotionally aware. Hearing about his heart condition was a shock, and immediately reframed how I saw him.

What Stayed With Me

What hit me most was that Andy wasn’t believed by the police. It’s frustrating — and raises a bigger question: do men actually get the help they need? With most domestic abuse cases framed one way, Andy found himself having to navigate — even manipulate — the system just to be taken seriously. Despite everything, he found a way out.

The Bigger Reflection

We often assume strength equals protection — that someone like Andy couldn’t be vulnerable in that way. But abuse doesn’t work like that. It often comes from people we love and trust, and that’s what makes it so powerful. Andy’s story challenges that perception completely.

A Line I Won’t Forget

“She was trying to smash the door in to get to me.”

That line says everything. The fear, the chaos, the reality of how extreme things became. It’s hard to picture — but that’s exactly why it matters.

Closing Thought

Through everything, strongman training was Andy’s anchor — the thing that kept him going. To then have that taken away by serious heart issues feels incredibly unfair. But if there’s one thing Andy has, it’s resilience. You just hope life gives him some peace moving forward.
