REFLECTIONS | REECE CALVERT
Title
What Reece Calvert Taught Me About Recovering From Alcoholism
The Story
Reece’s Instagram bio says it all: “Sober since 26/02/23. Trying to use my journey of addiction and a suicide attempt to help others.”
It’s a simple line, but it carries a powerful story. From a normal upbringing to a downward spiral, Reece has come out the other side a better person. A real story of struggle, reflection, and turning pain into purpose.
Opening
Reece was recommended to me by Craig, they knew each other through men’s groups. Being so young, I was intrigued. You wouldn’t expect someone his age to have already been through so much, especially to the point of nearly taking his own life.
What Stayed With Me
Reece is completely open about his past, and what stands out is how much he’s turned his life around. He’s found purpose and knows he has to keep moving forward—filling his days with meaning and staying on the right path. He’s still got strong support around him, despite everything he’s been through, and you can see how grateful he is for that.
The Bigger Reflection
Addiction, suicide, and mental health often go hand in hand. I’ve heard similar stories before, but what stands out is that it only takes one moment to change direction—and you have to want that change. Reece was right on the edge, close to ending his life, but something shifted. Whether it was timing, people around him, or something deeper, he’s still here, and now he’s representing others in the same position.
A Line I Won’t Forget
“I was stood on the train tracks, and I text Charlotte and said my goodbyes.”
Powerful words. That moment could have been the end. It shows just how close he came, how lost he felt, and how much he was carrying.
Closing Thought
Sometimes, it comes down to a single moment. Especially for men, we can be reactive—we act in that one bad moment without thinking about what comes next. Reece’s story is a reminder to pause. Take a minute. Things can change. Life can get better. Don’t make a decision you can’t come back from.
