REFLECTIONS | KIM KENNEDY
Title
What Kim Kennedy Taught Me About Facing Cancer With Courage
The Story
Kim opens up about her breast cancer journey and the unexpected impact it had on her life. Driven by a lack of local support, she founded Together We Can in Sunderland to help others facing similar challenges.
Opening
Kim was another person who set up a CIC because she couldn’t find a group nearby to support her after dealing with cancer. She felt like someone you already know, someone you might chat to in an office or pass while out shopping. And that’s why these stories matter. They’re about everyday people, sharing experiences that have shaped their lives, even though you’d never know it just by seeing them on the street.
What Stayed With Me
What stayed with me from talking to Kim was how she dealt with loss. It opened my eyes to things I’d never really thought about. The choice around her hair, keeping it, shaving it, or going through painful treatment just to try and hold onto it. For her, it wasn’t just hair, it was identity as a woman.
“My hair is important to me. I don’t want to lose a part of me.”
The Bigger Reflection
Identity. Appearance. These things matter, even when we’re healthy. But when you’re going through something life or death, those decisions come right to the front. What you think matters, you really find out in that moment.
A Line I Won’t Forget
“I just didn’t want to lose my hair.”
Because it’s not just the hair on your head. It’s your eyelashes, your eyebrows, everything. Things you don’t even think about. They shape your face, protect you, and affect how you feel day to day. It’s something I’d never thought about before.
Closing Thought
Courage. Bravery. Family.
All the things Kim loves and holds close, and what carried her through. And on top of that, she set up her own company to help others going through the same thing. That has to be admired.
