Title

What Danielle Chamberlain Taught Me About Escaping Scientology

The Story

Shane Knox founded Not a Statistic, an evening support group created to fill the gap in out-of-hours help. After working in the NHS, he’s taken that experience into his own work, driven by a strong sense of purpose. His journey has had its highs and lows, but he’s always searched for solutions—and come out stronger. Now, he uses that lived experience to help others find their way.

Opening

Shane came in while dealing with some personal issues, something I didn’t know until we sat down to chat. Through creating Not a Statistic, he’s found a new purpose. I connected with him easily—it felt like a natural conversation—and I was interested to understand what really drove him to start his own mental health group.

What Stayed With Me

It was clear Shane understands how his past has shaped who he is today. It felt like he was walking me through his life in a really open, honest way. He didn’t shy away from anything, but at the same time, there was a lot of positivity—especially when he spoke about his dad and the love he had for him.

The Bigger Reflection

Mental health groups, CICs, people creating spaces like this—they matter. They really do. They’re immediate, accessible support for people who need it. And that’s where the gap is.

Shane worked in the NHS, and it highlights something important—there’s a lack of immediate help, especially in mental health. Immediate is the key word. And it takes people like Shane, and many others, to step in and fill that gap.

A Line I Won’t Forget

“The reason I have purpose in my life, is the reason I am happy.”

That stayed with me. Despite everything he’s been through, Shane has found purpose—and that’s what drives him. It’s what gets you up in the morning. It’s what gives you direction. And really, it’s what most people are searching for.

Closing Thought

Purpose can be anything—big or small. It doesn’t have to be a business or a CIC. You don’t need to prove it to anyone or post it online. It just has to make you happy.

It’s not always about what you do, but how it makes you feel. And you won’t find it by sitting still and overthinking. You find it by doing—by taking action and seeing where it leads.
