Title

What Drew Graham Taught Me About Building a Gym With Purpose

The Story

Champion runner Drew Graham was in the prime of his life when one momentary decision changed everything. His story is a powerful reminder of how quickly life can shift, and what it takes to rebuild. From his injury to creating an accessible gym in his area, to competing in the Great North Run, Drew shows how he’s faced adversity head-on. A story of resilience, purpose, and finding a new path forward.

Opening

Going from being a champion runner to becoming quadriplegic is a huge shift. I really wanted to sit down with Drew to understand that mindset—how someone so competitive adapts when their whole world changes. What does that look like? Where does the new purpose come from?

What Stayed With Me

Acceptance stood out straight away. Drew comes across as calm and laid-back, but when you think about what he’s been through—a single moment changing everything—it’s hard to fully grasp. How do you live with that without falling into regret? That level of acceptance is something not everyone can reach.

The Bigger Reflection

This is about acceptance and change. Everything Drew had planned—his future, his goals—shifted instantly. But instead of holding onto what was lost, he’s built something new. He’s found purpose again, and more than that, he’s created something that helps others in similar situations. That’s a powerful way to move forward.

A Line I Won’t Forget

“This is embarrassing, I’m gonna die like this.”

Those words are powerful. In a moment that could have been his last, his mindset was still competitive—thinking about how he was perceived, even then. It shows how deeply ingrained that mentality was, and how real that moment was for him.

Closing Thought

Drew has found a new purpose and a new identity—one he may never have imagined before. He’s built something that didn’t exist, not just for himself but for others with spinal injuries. If that moment hadn’t happened, none of this would exist. And now, because of it, others have a place, a community, and support.
