BREAKING BREAD
A NEW PROJECT BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER THROUGH FOOD AND STORIES IN SUNDERLAND
Local Heroes is proud to launch Breaking Bread, a new community project created and produced by Local Heroes in partnership with Sunderland College and Highfield Academy.
Breaking Bread is a community storytelling project that uses food, memories and shared experiences to bring people together. Led by parents, children and staff at Highfield Academy, alongside the wider community, the project explores how recipes, food traditions and stories around the table can spark conversation, build understanding and strengthen connections between people from different backgrounds.
Running throughout the 2025–2026 academic year, the project invites families and community members to share recipes, take part in community meals and contribute their stories through interviews captured in film, photography and illustration. By celebrating everyday food traditions and the memories attached to them, Breaking Bread highlights how culture, identity and lived experience shape who we are.
Supported by Local Heroes, Sunderland College, Sunderland City Council and Destination North East England, the project aims to create a lasting legacy — showing how something as simple as sharing food can help rebuild a sense of belonging and community, one conversation at a time.
Everyone is invited to take part, to break bread, share stories and be part of something meaningful.
More coming soon.
