What Neil Cooper Taught Me About Rebuilding After a Broken Back

The Story

Neil found a new direction through fitness after breaking his back, and went on to write a book about it. Pulling his life back together. while raising two daughters as a single dad, is something to be admired. It hasn’t been an easy journey, with plenty of bumps along the way, but his ability to deal with whatever is in front of him is one of his superpowers. Recently diagnosed with ADHD and autism, he initially wanted to prove it wrong—but in the end, he’s dealt with it the only way he knows how: by moving forward.

Opening

Neil reached out after seeing another Storyland episode. He told me he’d broken his back and come back fitter than ever, but that wasn’t the full story. What unfolded was something I wasn’t expecting.

What Stayed With Me

Even though this is a story about adversity and physical recovery, what really stood out was Neil as a single parent. His relationship with his daughters. Making the decision to raise them on his own, knowing their mum wasn’t in a position to do so. Starting from nothing and building a life for them.

That, for me, was the heart of it—a man dedicating his life to his two daughters.

The Bigger Reflection

Commitment. Sacrifice. Responsibility.

Doing what needs to be done, even when life throws something at you that’s completely out of your control. That problem-solving mindset is what shaped Neil into the man, and the dad, he is today.

But relationships aren’t perfect. You can do your best and still face breakdowns. And sometimes, those moments become the most pivotal.

A Line I Won’t Forget

“You need to talk.”

For everything Neil went through, a lot of it was internal. He didn’t always have somewhere to go with it. That’s why he pushes others to speak, because when he finally did, it helped him face things and start dealing with them.

Closing Thought

I’ve got a lot of respect for Neil. Raising his daughters from babies, being both mum and dad at the same time. That level of dedication says everything.

At one point, his relationship with one of his daughters broke down, and they didn’t speak for years. I messaged Neil recently, and he told me they’ve started communicating again.

I don’t know if this episode played a part in that, but I’d like to think it helped start something.
