REFLECTIONS | CHARLIE MORRISON
Title
What Charlie Morrison Taught Me About Keeping a Community Alive
The Story
Charlie story is rooted in mining life, trade unionism, and community. From working in the pits to becoming involved in the 1984 miners’ strike, his journey reflects both the hardship and the unity of that time.
Out of that struggle came something lasting, the Auchengeich memorial. What started as a way to create purpose during the strike has grown into something that brings generations together, keeping the memory of those lost alive and strengthening the community around it.
Opening
Charlie felt grounded, honest, straight to the point, and full of lived experience. I wanted to understand how someone goes from working life in the pits to dedicating so much time to preserving something for others. There’s clearly a deeper meaning behind it.
What Stayed With Me
What stayed with me was the idea of purpose through hardship and keeping a memory of a whole community alive. During the strike, when everything felt uncertain, building the memorial gave people something to focus on. Something positive. It wasn’t just about remembering the past, it was about respect from an industry that built strong communities. People who risked their lives for a wage.
The Bigger Reflection
Community doesn’t just happen, it has to be built and maintained. Charlie’s story shows that if people don’t actively keep something alive, it disappears. Traditions, history, identity all need people willing to carry them forward.
A Line I Won’t Forget
“You’ve got to believe in yourself”
This stood out to me as it’s about standing up for yourself, and what you believe in. Having courage and to be able to speak your mind in a working class community and beyond.
Closing Thought
Charlie’s focus now is making sure the story doesn’t end with his generation. Passing it on, getting younger people involved, that’s the real challenge that I see in society. Keeping something alive isn’t about the past, it’s about making sure it has a future and helps shape a new generation. Remembering what others put themselves through for what they stood for is inspiring.
